HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women’s basketball team is in postseason play for a second straight year and the 12th time in the program’s history, learning late Monday evening that they earned an at-large bid to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.
The Owls will play Texas State at Tudor Fieldhouse on Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m., the first home WNIT contest for Rice since 2006. The winner of the Rice-Texas State plays the winner of New Mexico/Saint Mary’s with date/location to be determined.
This is the Owls’ eighth appearance in the WNIT and marks the first time the Owls have gone to the postseason in consecutive seasons since the 2011-12 (WNIT)/2012-13 (WBI) seasons. Last year Langley led the Owls to the program’s first-ever postseason title, winning the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
Rice (22-9, 10-6) was the fifth seed at this year’s Conference USA Tournament and advanced to the semifinals for the first time since the 2007 campaign, defeating Old Dominion (first round) and Middle Tennessee (quarterfinals).
The WNIT is an annual tournament involving 64 of the nation’s top Division I basketball teams. All games, including the semifinals and championship, are hosted by participating schools. The single elimination tournament features 32 first-round games, followed by 16 second-round games, eight third round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games, and the championship (which is televised nationally on CBS Sports Network).
The event offers 32 automatic berths, one to each established conference, and 32 at-large berths.
Tickets are on sale now here and Thursday's game will also be streamed via CUSAtv.
