Rainey Tabbed C-USA Freshman of the Week
March 9, 2015
IRVING, Texas - Rice freshman guard Shani Rainey earned the Conference USA Freshman of the Week award, the league office announced on Monday.
The Fairview, Texas native played a big role in helping the Owls earn the final berth in the 2015 C-USA Championship, scoring in double-figures in back-to-back contests. Rainey scored a career-high 22 points in the loss to UTSA last Thursday, making a season-best 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
She followed up that performance by scoring 11 points off the bench in the Owls' season-saving 79-62 win over UTEP on Saturday. For the week Rainey averaged 16.5 points on 47 percent shooting from the field and made 80 percent of her free throw attempts.
Rainey and the rest of the Owls will open the C-USA Championship as the No. 12 seed and face No. 5 seed Old Dominion on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
