Owls Host UTSA, Final Tournament Spot Still In Play
The Rice Owls (8-19, 3-13) return to Tudor Fieldhouse for their final two contests of the regular season, beginning Thursday evening at 6 p.m. against UTSA (14-14, 9-7). Rice remains just one game back of 12th seeded North Texas (4-12) in the Conference USA standings, the final spot to qualify for the championship tournament to be held March 11-14 in Birmingham, Alabama. Rice defeated UTSA in the C-USA opener back on Jan. 2 in San Antonio, defeating the Roadrunners 62-58 in overtime.
Last Time Out
Rice sophomore Jasmine Goodwine scored a team-best 17 points and Christal Porter recorded her 12th double-double of the season but it was not enough to overcome the Charlotte 49ers in a 74-59 loss last Saturday evening at Halton Arena. Rice shot just 34 percent (24-of-70) from the field for the game while Charlotte hit 41 percent (29-of-71) of their shots. The Niners outscored the Owls in points in the paint (30-28), points off turnovers (13-3), second chance points (15-10) and fast break points (21-0). Charlotte had four players score in double-figures, including a game-high 18 points from Kira Gordon. Hillary Sigmon (17 points), Ayanna Holmes (13 points) and Lefty Webster (11 points) all contributed double-digit scoring for the Niners.
UTSA Scouting Report
After starting the C-USA season with a 1-3 record the Roadrunners recovered to find themselves in the middle of the pack in the league standings by winning five of their previous eight games. UTSA, who is in a three-way tie for 5th in C-USA, is coming off a 60-53 win over Louisiana Tech. The Roadrunners allow the fourth-fewest points (60.2) in the league and have the best rebounding differential (+5.0) amongst all 14 teams. Senior guard Kamra King leads the Roadrunners in scoring (11.9 ppg). The Roadrunners have allowed 65 points or less in four of their past five games. UTSA is just 4-7 on the road this season.
Porter Saving Her Best for Last
Rice senior forward Christal Porter is averaging a career-best 10.9 points and 11.3 rebounds this season and has posted a career-high 12 double-doubles. Porter has 17 double-figure rebounding performances and is ranked 13th in the nation, first in C-USA, in rebounding. With her 306 rebounds this season, Porter is tied with Amelia Cooper (1988-89) for the sixth-best single-season in Rice history. Porter has also moved to fourth place in school history in career rebounds with 907.
