The Rice Owls women's basketball team swept the weekly Conference USA awards as sophomore Jessica Kuster was named the league's Player of the Week and Christal Porter was selected as C-USA's Freshman of the Week. It is the third time this season one team has swept the C-USA women's basketball weekly awards.

The Owls defeated Houston (68-40) and league-leader UTEP (52-48) last week on the strength of Jessica Kuster, who averaged a double-double (22.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg). From San Antonio, Texas, and Reagan H.S., Kuster shot 56.3 percent (18-of-32) from the field with multiple defensive players around her. The forward hit nine-of-16 field goals in both contests and went 2-of-3 from three-point range against Houston. In the win over C-USA's first place team and in front of 6,421 fans at UTEP, Kuster wowed the crowd with a game-high 22 points, five rebounds, and three steals. She nearly outscored UTEP in the second-half as the Miners tallied 20 points to Kuster's 18 points. She scored the first eight points of the second-half for Rice and kick-started the Owls' comeback as they trailed 28-22 at halftime.

She started the week by producing game highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds in 29 minutes of action in the win over Houston. Kuster actually outscored the Cougars in the first-half 15 to 13. This is her first C-USA Player of the Week honor, after collecting a C-USA best 11 Freshman of the Week accolades a year ago.

Porter was second to teammate Jessica Kuster in scoring last week, averaging 9.0 points per game. She had 10 points and six rebounds in the win over Houston and followed that effort with eight points and a team-high six rebounds in the road win at UTEP. She went 3-5 from the field vs. Houston and 4-7 at UTEP to shoot a team-high 58.3 percent from the field. This is Porter's second Freshman of the Week honor as she earned her first on Dec. 19.

Rice's two victories moved the Owls into a two-way tie for third-place in the C-USA standings with one regular season game to play, Memphis at home on Thursday (7 p.m.).
