NEWS & NOTES
Owls Return for Final Homestand
A red-hot Rice Owls team returns to Houston this week for the final two home games of the 2015-16 season. Winners of three straight, the Owls will be looking for their first four-game win streak since the 2012-13 campaign when they face Southern Miss on Thursday at 7 p.m. A win on Thursday would give the Owls their first four-game win streak in C-USA play since the 2010-11 season and their most wins in conference since the 2011-12 campaign (9). The Lady Eagles defeated Rice earlier this season, 68-62, in Hattiesburg on Feb. 6. The Owls are 3-9 at home this season while Southern Miss is just 1-10 on the road.
Last Time Out
The Owls completed a Florida road trip sweep with a 68-62 victory over the FIU Panthers last Saturday afternoon at FIU Arena. In the process the Owls recorded their third straight victory, their first three-game win streak since the 2013-14 campaign. For a second straight game the Owls had four players score in double figures, led by a career-high 19 points from sophomore guard Wendy Knight. The win at FIU, combined with the victory at FAU, marked the first time the Owls won consecutive games on a conference road trip since the 2006-07 season.
Southern Miss Scouting Report
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 65-53 home victory over UTSA last Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak. USM is led by freshman center Caitlin Jenkins, who is averaging a team-high 14.1 points a game during C-USA play and ranks first in the league in blocked shots (2.4 bpg) and is second in rebounding (11.1 rpg) during league play. The Lady Eagles allow the second-fewest points (61.1) in the league.
Spreading the Wealth
For a second straight game, and third time this season, the Owls had four players score 10 or more points in last Saturday’s 68-62 win at FIU. The Owls are now ever so close to have four players average 10 or more points during C-USA play, led by junior forward Jasmine Goodwine (15.9 ppg), sophomore guard Shani Rainey (10.6 ppg), junior guard Maya Hawkins (10.5 ppg) and sophomore guard Wendy Knight (9.5 ppg).
What’s On Deck
Rice closes out their home portion of the 2015-16 season on Saturday when they host Louisiana Tech in a rematch of the Feb. 4 contest which the Owls dropped in Ruston, 63-61. The game will mark the final home contest for seniors Elena Gumbs, Alyssa Lang, and Megan Palmer, who will be honored during a pre-game ceremony.
