Owls Travel to Louisiana Tech on Wednesday
Winners of four straight and 12 of their last 13, the Rice Owls hit the road on Wednesday for a trip to Ruston, La. to face the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters. The Owls, who are just a half game back of first place in the C-USA standings, just completed a three-game home sweep while Tech has lost four of their last six overall. The Lady Techsters lead the all-time series over the Owls, 13-8, including a 62-51 victory over Rice last season at Thomas Assembly Center.
Last Time Out
The Owls top-ranked defense shined bright again last Thursday in a 62-56 victory over Southern Miss. the team’s 12th consecutive win at home dating back to last season. Rice allowed 60 points or less for a fourth straight game and seventh time in league play. Redshirt sophomore guard Erica Ogwumike recorded a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) for a third consecutive game and swiped a game-high five steals while senior Wendy Knight scored in double-figures (13 points) for a 10th straight game.
Lady Techsters Scouting Report
Louisiana Tech is 10-3 at home this season but are coming off a 66-61 home loss to C-USA leading UAB on Sunday and have lost two straight at Thomas Assembly Center overall. Alexus Malone (13.0 ppg) and Kierra Anthony (13.0 ppg) leads the team in scoring while Taylor Stahly is fourth in C-USA in made three-pointers (62) and second in three-point percentage (42.8%). The Lady Techsters are near the bottom of the league (11th) in turnovers per game (18.1).
Best Start in School History
With their victory over Southern Miss last Thursday, the Owls improved to 17-3 on the season, which is the best 20-game start in program history. The Owls bested the 1981-82 team, which began the season 16-4 through the first 20 games. The school record for most wins in a season is held by the 2004-05 Owls, who won 24 games and were the WAC champions.
Racking Up Road Wins
With an 8-3 record away from Tudor Fieldhouse, the Owls have already registered the third-most road victories in a single-season in school history. Only Rice teams from 2003-04 (10 wins) and 2010-11 (9 wins) won more games.
The Owls currently have the number one scoring defense during C-USA play, allowing just 52.5 points per contest. Rice has held 13 straight opponents to below 70 points and are allowing C-USA foes to shoot just 36.8 percent from the field, also the lowest mark in C-USA.
The Owls return home to host the WKU Lady Toppers in a critical C-USA showdown on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.
Lady Techsters Hand Owls 62-51 Road Loss
Rice redshirt sophomore guard Nicole Iademarco surpassed the 20-point barrier for a third consecutive game but the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters used a 20-12 third quarter advantage to defeat the Owls 62-51 Saturday evening at Thomas Assembly Center.
