Road Trip Comes to a Close
The Owls (6-11, 1-5) close out a string of five of seven conference games on the road with a trip to Ruston, Louisiana to face the Lady Techsters (9-8, 4-2) Saturday at 6 p.m. at Thomas Assembly Center. Rice will be looking to snap a season-long five game losing streak while LA Tech is coming off a 92-57 win over North Texas, hitting a program-record tying 12 three-pointers en route to a season-high in points. LA Tech leads the all-time series against Rice, 9-6, but the Owls won both meetings last year, including their first ever win at LA Tech.
Last Time Out
Rice dropped their fifth consecutive conference game Thursday evening, falling 65-54 to Southern Miss at Reed Green Coliseum. The Owls were undone by a 17-0 second half run by the Lady Eagles, falling behind by as much as 51-32 with a little under 10 minutes remaining. The Owls closed strong with inspired play from their bench and cut the deficit to 56-48 with 3:35 remaining, but USM stymied the run. Senior forward Megan Shafer was a spark off the bench, recording season-highs in points (9), rebounds (7), assists (2) and blocks (1) in just 13 minutes of play.
Louisiana Tech Scouting Report
Under first-year head coach Tyler Summitt, the Lady Techsters currently sit in a third place tie with Southern Miss in the C-USA standings. LA Tech is 5-1 at home this season, where they average 82 points per game and shoot 43 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc. Senior guard Kelia Shelton leads the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 12.
