Owls Set to Host Blazers Thursday
Following an 0-2 road trip, the Owls return home to Tudor Fieldhouse to host the UAB Blazers Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Rice is 2-6 this season at home while UAB is just 1-6 on the road. This will be the 12th meeting between the two schools with UAB holding a 6-5 edge in the all-time series. The Blazers have won three of the last five meetings, including a 75-59 victory over the Owls last season in Birmingham (2/14/15).
Last Time Out
Sophomore Shani Rainey scored a team-high 13 points and junior Jasmine Goodwine chipped in another 12 points in the Owls’ 81-52 loss at Marshall Saturday afternoon at the Henderson Center. The Owls allowed the Herd to shoot 52 percent (27-of-52) from the field while Rice shot just 39 percent from the floor. Marshall connected on 10-of-22 shots from beyond the arc and outscored the Owls 29-12 in points off turnovers. Rainey scored the 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting (3-of-8 at the free throw line) while Goodwine made 5-of-10 shots from the field and went 2-of-2 at the charity stripe.
UAB Scouting Report
The Blazers enter play Thursday winners of two straight and seven of their last 10 overall. UAB is led in scoring by senior guard Chelsee Black (13.7 ppg) while senior forward Brittany Winborne is nearly averaging a double-double (9.5 ppg/9.6 rpg). Winborne tied a career-high with 21 points in the Blazers’ win vs. Charlotte and ranks first in C-USA in field goal percentage (57.7%). Freshman guard Deanna Kuzmanic is averaging 12.9 points a game and ranks third amongst all NCAA freshmen with 2.6 three’s a contest.
Hawkins Making Her Mark
Rice junior guard Maya Hawkins is having a career season and through five conference games ranks third in the league in assists (5.6 apg), fifth in minutes played (38.2) and seventh in assists/turnover ratio (1.3). Hawkins has made at least one three-pointer in 13 of 16 games played and is fifth amongst all C-USA players in treys made per game (1.9).
What’s On Deck
The Owls close out their quick two-game home stand with a Saturday afternoon contest against Middle Tennessee at 2 p.m. Following the game against the Blue Raiders that Owls will have just four remaining games at Tudor Fieldhouse.
