HOUSTON – Rice junior guard Maya Hawkins was named the American Sports Network women’s basketball national player of the week, the organization announced Monday afternoon.
Hawkins, from Mansfield, Texas, poured in a team and career-high 27 points in the Owls 100-97 triple overtime victory over the North Texas Mean Green on Sunday afternoon. Hawkins made 9-of-17 shots from the field, including 5-of-11 from three-point territory, to go along with seven assists and five rebounds in 47 minutes of action.
The Owls’ leading scorer (11.5 ppg), Hawkins ranks fifth in Conference USA in both total three-pointers made (29) and three-point makes per contest (2.1). Hawkins has already surpassed her career-high of 28 three-point makes set her sophomore season.
Rice, winners of two straight, will look to carry their momentum on the road this week with a pair of contests at WKU (Jan. 14) and Marshall (Jan. 16).
