NEWS & NOTES
Owls Set to Host Mean Green on American Sports Network
The Rice Owls women’s basketball team will be looking for their second straight C-USA victory when they host the North Texas Mean Green on Sunday at 2 p.m., which will be televised on the American Sports Network. Both teams will be playing their first game in seven days. The all-time series between the two schools is tied (3-3) with the two squads splitting last year’s matchup.
Last Time Out
Rice secured their first C-USA victory of the season in dramatic fashion last Sunday afternoon, defeating the UTSA Roadrunners 49-48 in overtime at Tudor Fieldhouse. Junior guard Maya Hawkins hit the game-tying jumper with 24 seconds left in the extra period and the Owls then secured a defensive rebound and were fouled with one second remaining. Sophomore guard Wendy Knight proceeded to make the game-winning free throw to give the Owls their first home victory of the year. Hawkins led the Owls in scoring with 12 points, followed by 11 points from Knight.
North Texas Scouting Report
The Mean Green is off to a 1-1 start in C-USA play and is coming off a 75-67 home setback to UTEP last Sunday. North Texas has three players averaging double-figure points, led by 11.2 points from junior guard Candice Adams. Junior guard Kelsey Criner and senior forward Acheil Tac average 10.8 and 10.1 points, respectively. Much like the Owls, North Texas is a low-scoring team (59.2) that limits its opponents to just 60.2 points per contest. The Mean Green is led by first-year head coach Jalie Mitchell, who returned to her alma mater to become the eighth head coach in North Texas history.
Over the past six games the Owls are surrendering just 56.5 points per game, while limiting their opponents to 38 percent shooting (30 percent from beyond the arc). During the same span the Owls are outrebounding the opposing team 40.2-36.2 and forcing 15 turnovers per game.
Hawkins Dialing Long Distance
Rice junior Maya Hawkins ranks ninth in C-USA with her 1.8 three-point makes per game. The Mansfield, Texas native has made at least one three-pointer in all but two games this season. Hawkins has also dished out 3 or more assists in eight games this year.
Rice begins a stretch where they play five of their next seven games on the road with a trip to WKU on Thursday, Jan. 14. The Owls next home game will be Jan. 21 vs. UAB.
