Owls Begin Road Heavy January Thursday at Middle Tennessee
Rice will look to end a mini two-game losing streak this Thursday when they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to face the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee. The Owls are coming off consecutive home losses to begin C-USA play while Middle Tennessee rallied on the road to defeat UAB in their C-USA opener. Rice is 4-2 on the road this season, which includes three straight victories away from Tudor Fieldhouse. The Blue Raiders are 3-4 this season at the Murphy Center and lead the all-time series over the Owls, 4-0.
Last Time Out
The Owls dropped their second straight home contest with a 69-51 setback Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse to the Charlotte 49ers. Rice was led in scoring by senior forward Jasmine Goodwine (14 points) for a second straight game but Charlotte used a 25-8 advantage in the second quarter to seize control of the game and never relinquished the lead. The Owls outscored the 49ers in points in the paint (32-22) and points off turnovers (12-7) but Charlotte connected on 10–of-24 from beyond the arc, led by 22 points from guard Ciara Gregory (6-of-12 from deep).
Goodwine Approaching 1,000 Points
Senior forward Jasmine Goodwine enters play Saturday with 990 career points, just 10 points away from becoming the 16th player in Rice history to reach the 1,000 point milestone. The Killeen, Texas native is averaging 10.5 points per game this season and has scored in double-figures in nine of 13 games this season, including three straight.
Middle Tennessee Scouting Report
Last year’s C-USA Championship winners, the Blue Raiders enter play on Thursday as winners in four of their last five contests. Senior guard Ty Petty was named the C-USA Player of the Week on Monday following her 29-point performance in the win over UAB in which she surpassed 1,000 career points. Petty, along with sophomore forward Alex Johnson (17.4 ppg), were both named to the C-USA Preseason All-Conference team. Middle Tennessee was picked to finish second in the C-USA Preseason Poll.
Sharing The Rock
Rice ranks first in Conference USA in assists per game (16.2) and total assists (210). Senior point guard Maya Hawkins is the league leader in both assists per game (5.3) and total assists (69). The Mansfield, Texas native is also second in C-USA in assist turnover ratio (2.23). Hawkins has dished out 5 or more assists in eight games this season.
Doing It With Defense
The Owls have not allowed 70 points in a game this season and rank as the top scoring defense in C-USA (54.6 ppg). Rice’s 35.7 opponents field-goal percentage ranks second in C-USA, as does their 26.4 opponents three-point field goal percentage.
Rice remains on the road as they travel to UAB on Jan. 7 for a 2 p.m. showdown with the Blazers. The Owls will then play just one game the following week, a Jan. 14 tussle at North Texas.
