NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Rice Owls women's basketball team was unable to overcome a tough shooting night in a 59-45 loss to the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Saturday evening at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Rice senior forward Alyssa Lang fell just one point shy of her first career double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds in 33 minutes off the bench. Lang, who also recorded a career-high four steals, played a big role in helping the Owls bench outscore SFA's, 19-8.
Senior guard Maya Hawkins and sophomore guard Shani Rainey chipped in seven points in the loss. The Owls (1-8) were held to 28 percent (13-of-46) shooting by the Ladyjacks (5-5) and were outscored 21-7 in points off turnovers.
SFA's Taylor Schippers scored a game-high 19 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Stevi Parker also scored in double-figures for the Ladyjacks with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Rice erased an early 6-1 deficit by outscoring SFA 13-3 the rest of the period to take the first quarter, 14-9. Hawkins scored five points in the quarter, including a quarter-ending buzzer beater on a driving floater as time expired.
The Owls pushed their lead to as large as 18-11 with 6:28 left in the second quarter before SFA recaptured a 20-19 edge with 2:03 left in the quarter. However, Rice closed the half strong with six unanswered points with five points coming from Gabrielle Stanton to take a 25-20 lead into halftime.
SFA outscored Rice 19-11 in the third quarter with Parker scoring eight of those points and Schippers registering five points. The Owls were then outscored 20-9 in the final 10 minutes and never got closer than a 41-38 deficit with 8:11 remaining.
The Owls return home to host Texas Southern on Monday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. in the team's final contest before the Christmas break.
