Dec. 20, 2012
HOUSTON, Texas- Nakachi Maduka hit two free throws with 0.1 seconds remaining to give Rice a 43-41 victory over future C-USA member UTSA at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls overcame a nine point deficit in the last 13 minutes to win the game.
Down 33-24 with 11:22 remaining, the Owls (6-4) went on a 15-2 run to take a 39-35 lead with 2:21 to play. The Owls held a 41-39 lead until Simone Young of UTSA (6-5) tied the game with 28 seconds remaining. The Owls got two shots away on their last possession, and a scrum underneath the basket with time winding down resulted in a Roadrunner foul and sent Maduka to the line for two shots, where she would sink both free throws to win the game.
Rice erased a seven point deficit in the first half to enter the break tied at 16.
The Owls have won four consecutive games and are 5-1 at home this season.
Nakachi Maduka led the Owls with 12 points, including the pivotal two at the end of the game.
Zoe Rogers had the second double-digit scoring game of her season, scoring 10 points, all in the second half, to help the Owls come back to win the game.
Christal Porter led the Owls with a career-high 14 rebounds.
The Owls' perimeter defense remained stout, holding UTSA to 1-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc. Rice has held its opponents to 11.3% shooting from 3-point (8-for-71) over the past six games.
Rice returns to action after an eight day break for Christmas on Dec. 28 when it hosts UTPA in Tudor Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
