Owls Lose 68-64 to SFA in Overtime

Nacogdoches, Texas - Tammara Marion scored a team-high 20 points to lead SFA to a 68-64 overtime win over the visiting Rice Owls Tuesday night in Johnson Coliseum. Rice is now 5-6 on the season, while SFA improves to 9-2.

Owl senior Brianna Hypolite had her finest game of the season with a game and season-high 29 points with 9 rebounds in 41 minutes of action. Hypolite scored 26 of her points in the second half and overtime. Sophomore Jessica Kuster added 13 points in only 28 minutes.

D'Frantz Smart dished out four assists and is now Rice's all-time career assist leader with 478. She surpasses Kim Lawson's total of 475 (1999-2003).

Jessica Goswitz nailed a three-pointer to give Rice a 13-6 lead (14:21), but SFA scored 15 unanswered for a 21-13 lead. The Owls only scored two field goals, a layup by D'Frantz Smart and bucket at the buzzer by Candace Ashford as SFA led 29-18 at the half.

Marion also received double-digit scoring help from Annette Davis (17) and Ashley Bettis tallied 11 points. Davis also led SFA with 8 rebounds.

Owl all-star Jessica Kuster only played nine minutes in the first half after getting bopped in the nose and the Owls hurt themselves by committing 16 turnovers.

Neither team shot the ball well with the Owls making 33.8 percent (22-65) and SFA at 36.2 (21-58) or handled it well. Rice committed 26 turnovers, while SFA had 28 miscues. SFA did make 21 of its 29 free throws to Rice's 15-25. Rice is now 0-1 in overtime games this season.

Rice outscored SFA 14-2 in the first four minutes of the second half to take a 32-31 lead. Brianna Hypolite scored 7 points and Jessica Kuster started the second half to score 5 points in the 14-2 Owl run.

Rice actually outscored SFA 29-8 in the first 11:45 of the second half with Brianna Hypolite providing 16 of those points.

Two free throws by Hypolite gave the Owls their biggest lead of the game at 51-40 (6:08).

SFA then battled back by going on a 13-4 run to be down only by two at 55-53 with the ball and 4.3 ticks on the clock. SFA's Tammara Marion then drove right baseline and drained a floater to tie the ballgame and force overtime. SFA outscored Rice 15-4 in the final 6:08 of the game.

A Hypolite trey gave Rice a 58-57 lead in overtime, but it was short lived as SFA rattled off the next 9 points for a commanding 66-58 margin. Hypolite hit another three-pointer at the buzzer to make it 68-64.

The Owls are next in action on Dec. 30 when they play at UTSA at 7 p.m.
