CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Rice junior Nicole Iademarco scored a game-high 21 points and redshirt sophomore Erica Ogwumike added an additional 20 points to help lead the Owls to a 67-56 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday evening.

Rice (8-2) won their third straight game overall in large part because of the long ball, making 12-of-30 (40 percent) attempts from beyond the arc. Iademarco, who scored 10 points in the third quarter alone, connected on 5-of-12 attempts from three-point territory and made 8-of-18 shots from the field overall. Ogwumike shot 7-of-13 from the field, including a 3-of-5 performance from beyond the arc. Junior Lauren Grigsby scored 11 key points off the Rice bench in 24 minutes of action.

The Owls outrebounded the Islanders 38-30, including a 12-9 advantage on the offensive boards. Freshman center Alexah Chrisman led Rice with a season-high eight rebounds while also recording three blocks.

Rice improved to 7-0 this season when holding opponents below 60 points.

“I thought our last two days of practice were really good, and today it felt like we were starting to find our rhythm again coming off of finals,” Rice head coach Tina Langley said.

The Owls outscored the Islanders (6-4) 15-8 in the opening quarter behind six points from Iademarco before expanding the lead to 36-20 at the half. Rice made four three-pointers in the second quarter and went on a 12-5 run in the first six minutes to create some cushion.

The Islanders outscored the Owls 21-17 in the third period and managed to trim the deficit to 46-39 with 2:31 left in the quarter, but a 7-2 close helped Rice push the lead back to 53-41 at quarter’s close.

In the fourth quarter the Owls used an 8-0 run midway through, which included a three-point play by Grigsby and the team’s 12th three-pointer of the night from Wendy Knight to put the game out of reach.

The Owls will play their final non-conference road game of the season on Thursday when they travel to Prairie View A&M for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
