LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Rice Owls women’s basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, dropping a 73-65 decision to the Kansas Jayhawks (5-0) at Allen Fieldhouse.

Rice (5-1) trailed just 61-58 with 6:29 left in the fourth quarter but the Jayhawks managed to stave off any Owls comeback attempt with a 12-7 advantage the rest of the way.

“I’m proud of the way our team played today,” Rice head coach Tina Langley said. “I thought we really battled. We did a good job hanging tough on the boards but on the defensive end we had a few breakdowns where we allowed open shots. Kansas is a well-coached team and was able to withstand our run.”

Redshirt sophomore guard Erica Ogwumike notched her third 20-plus point performance of the season with a game-high 22 points, 17 of which came in the second half. In addition, Ogwumike snagged a game-high tying 11 rebounds to accomplish her second double-double of the season. Junior Nicole Iademarco and redshirt junior Oliva Ogwumike each scored 15 points in the loss while junior guard Gabrielle Stanton led all players with five assists.

The undefeated Jayhawks were led offensively by Kylee Kopatich (18 points), who was one of four players to score in double-figures.

Iademarco kept the Owls close with all 15 of her points coming in the first 20 minutes, making 6-of-7 shots from the field and 3-of-4 attempts from beyond the arc. Rice trailed 40-30 at halftime after the Jayahwks closed the period on a 12-4 run.

Kansas used a 9-3 run to start the third quarter to open up their largest lead of the game, 47-33, but out of a timeout the Owls responded with an 8-0 spurt of their own spearheaded by a personal 5-0 run by Olivia Ogwumike followed by a three-point play from Lauren Grigsby. Rice was able to get as close as 50-48 with 1:07 remaining in the quarter after a pair of made free throws from Erica Ogwumike.

In the fourth, Wendy Knight scored five straight points to trim the Jayhawks lead to 61-58 with 6:29 to go but the Owls were never able to climb closer as the Jayhawks held on to remain undefeated.

Rice will return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 29 when they travel to Texas A&M to face the Aggies at 7 p.m. on the SEC Network+.
