Chicago - Sophomore Jessica Kuster registered her third double-double of the season with 29 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Rice Owls to a 77-50 victory over Chicago State Friday night.
This was a homecoming game for Rice senior point guard D'Frantz Smart of Chicago's Whitney Young H.S. Smart finished the evening with 5 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 8 steals.
Brianna Hypolite had another strong outing for Rice with 14 points and 5 steals. Freshman Reem Moussa scored her first collegiate points as an Owl and concluded with 7 points. Freshman Christal Porter was the Owls' second-leading rebounder for Rice with 7 boards.
Rice rolled out to a 14-2 lead and soon increased it to 26-9 (12:33) as Kuster made her first six field goals for 12 points to outscore the Cougars. Just like Wednesday's game vs. Houston Baptist, the Owls used a swarming full-court press to cause havoc and create easy buckets and were able to score 16 first half points off of CSU turnovers.
The Owls were up 32-11 at 9:56, but the Cougars closed out the half by outscoring Rice 15 to 5. Kuster actually notched her third double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the first 20 minutes of the contest. She was 7-12 from the field and 3-4 at the free throw line.
The Cougars cut the score to within 8 early in the second half at 39-31, but the Owls went on a 12-0 run for a 51-31 commanding lead.
For the game, Rice shot 41 percent from the field and had 21 steals, which ties for fifth-best in school history. The Owls also made 7-16 from beyond the arc for 44 percent. Chicago State shot 37 percent from the field and was led by Janay Dockery's 15 points, while Paris Williams added 10 points.
Rice plays Sunday at Valparaiso, with tip-off slated for noon (CT).
