Stillwater, Okla. - Oklahoma State had five players in double-digit scoring as the Cowgirls defeated Rice 96-60 Sunday afternoon in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
OSU (1-0) was led by Kendra Suttles' 27 points and 12 rebounds, both were game-highs. Tiffany Bias tallied 20 points and dished a career-high 12 assists. Liz Donohoe added 17 points, while Vicky McIntyre added 13 points, and Lindsey Keller scored 10.
The Owls (0-2) were led by junior Jessica Goswitz's 9 points, all on three-point baskets. Scoring 8 points for Rice were Brittany Hypolite, Candace Ashford, and Amenemope McKinney. Jessica Kuster had 7 points and a team-high 9 rebounds.
Rice held its only lead of the contest at 3-2 after a trey by Brianna Hypolite, but OSU responded by outscoring the Owls 24 to 6 for a commanding 26-9 lead that it would not relinquish. The Cowgirls were able to score at will on the interior as well as on the perimeter and their 2-3 zone defense forced Rice to shoot from outside.
OSU cruised to a 58-27 half-time lead by making 65 percent from the field (24-37) including 5-9 from beyond the arc. The Owls managed to shoot 27 percent (9-33) and 4-16 from three-point range.
The Owls scrapped and played hard in the second half and their press forced OSU to 10 turnover. OSU only outscored the Owls 38-33 in the final 20 minutes. Rice did go on a 11-0 run to cut the deficit to 79-52, but the Cowgirls answered with an 8-2 run of their own. For the game, Rice shot 30 percent to OSU's 55 percent.
Rice hosts its first game of the season on Wednesday, November 16 when its hosts Houston Baptist. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
