HOUSTON- Rice's women's basketball team defeated Prairie View A&M 57-42 on Friday night at Tudor Fieldhouse. Jessica Kuster led the Owls with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

The Owls advanced to 1-0 on the season, and won its fourth home opener in five tries at Tudor Fieldhouse. Prairie View drops to 0-1 on the season. The Owls are now 27-8 in season openers.

Preseason C-USA Player of the Year Jessica Kuster posted a double double in her first game this season, her 28th career double-double. She went 9-13 from the field on the evening, and needs nine points to reach 1,000 for her career.

Christal Porter poured in 12 points with eight rebounds. The 2011-12 C-USA All-Freshman selection went 6-10 from the floor.

Megan Palmer grabbed nine rebounds in her collegiate debut and Jessica Goswitz had five assists in her first game playing point guard since high school.

Rice only trailed once in the game, when the Lady Panthers took a 2-0 lead early in the first half. Alyssa Lang hit a three pointer, in her first collegiate field goal attempt, to give Rice a 7-4 lead with 15:05 left in the first half, a lead which the Owls would not relinquish.

Rice took a 29-19 lead into the break and led by as much as 20 in the second half as they cruised to victory.

Four Owls made their collegiate debuts tonight. In addition to Palmer and Lang, Elena Gumbs and Breion Allen saw game action.

Rice travels to No. 20 Tennessee in its next game, as the Lady Vols host the Owls in their first home game since 1973 without Pat Summit at the helm on November 15 at 6 p.m. CT. Owl senior Jessica Goswitz is originally from Knoxville.

The Owls return home on Nov. 27, as Rice hosts Brittney Griner and No. 1 Baylor at Tudor Fieldhouse.
