Huntsville, Texas - Britni Martin scored a game-high 22 points to lead Sam Houston State to 73-55 victory over the Rice Owls in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational Wednesday night inside Johnson Coliseum.
The loss ends the Owls' season at 16-16, while the Bearkats improve to 18-11.
Owl sophomore Jessica Kuster posted her 14th double-double of the season with 18 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Senior Brianna Hypolite added 16 points and Christal Porter, a freshman, scored eight points and snared 11 caroms.
The Owls made 27.1 percent from the field (19-70) including 0-19 from three-point range, which hurt their chances Wednesday night.
"Shooting percentage has been our problem all year," said Owl head coach Greg Williams. "We just made it tough on ourselves. We've been shooting bad, but we've never gone 0-fer from the three-point line. Most were pretty good looks and really a lot of them weren't even close. That's disappointing because we work a lot on the `three.' It's part of our offense, part of our system."
Rice had cut Sam Houston State's lead to four on three different occasions in the second-half (42-38, 44-40, and 53-49). With the clock showing 6:25, the Owls received back-to-back buckets from Hypolite and Porter to make it 53-49, but SHSU closed out the contest on a 20 to six run to secure the victory.
Also in double-digits for SHSU were Chanice Smith 12 points and Jasmine Johnson added 11 points. Sequeena Thomas led her squad with 14 rebounds. The Bearkats shot 38.3 percent (23-60) including eight of 20 from three-point range.
