HOUSTON – Rice redshirt sophomore guard Nicole Iademarco scored over 20 points for the fourth straight game, and the Owls women’s basketball team used a 31-point outburst in the third quarter to surge to an 84-74 win over Marshall on Thursday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.

The Owls (17-11, 8-9) shot 8-of-18 behind the three-point arc and saw four players score in double digits in their first home game since February 11th. Iademarco led all players with 25 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Junior guard Shani Rainey pitched in 19 points, shooting an impressive 70 percent on the night (7-of-10), and senior forward Jasmine Goodwine added 13 in her first game back in action since January 28th. Junior guard Wendy Knight also scored 10 points and added seven rebounds and a game-high five steals.

With the win, Rice recorded its first 17-win season since 2010-11 and scored over 80 points for the seventh time this season on 19 assists.

“I was excited to see our team bounce back,” said Rice head coach Tina Langley. “We passed the ball well, we shared the ball well, we defended, and I was really pleased with the way we performed tonight as a unit. I thought it was a great team win.”

After a back and forth first quarter that saw five Owls players register a field goal, Rice headed to the second with a 16-15 lead. A 7-2 run in favor of the Marshall (12-16, 4-13) to start off the second quarter swung momentum their way, but Rice responded with a quick five-point burst of their own. After 10 minutes and five lead changes, a last second putback layup from Talequia Hamilton gave Marshall a 33-29 lead heading into halftime.

The Owls came out firing after the break, starting the third quarter on an 11-2 run that included back to back buckets from Knight to take a 38-34 lead. Rice wouldn’t stop there; led by 15 points from Iademarco, including three triples and a last-second putback, the Owls erupted for 31 total points on an 11-of-19 shooting in the third period and entered the fourth quarter with a 60-52 lead.

Marshall threatened early in the final quarter, starting with a pair of three-pointers to pull within 61-58 at the 8:14 mark. However, that was the closest the Herd would get. After trading baskets, a 10-0 Rice run all but sealed the deal on the Owls’ 17th win of the season.

Rice will return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m., when they face WKU at Tudor Fieldhouse in their final regular-season game. Prior to the game, the Owls will honor the careers of their three seniors; Goodwine, Maya Hawkins and Adaeze Obinnah.
