MIAMI - The Rice Owls women's basketball team completed a Florida road trip sweep with a 68-62 victory over the FIU Panthers Saturday afternoon at FIU Arena. In the process the Owls recorded their third straight victory, their first three-game win streak since the 2013-14 campaign.

For a second straight game the Owls (7-18, 6-8) had four players score in double figures, led by a career-high 19 points from sophomore guard Wendy Knight. The San Antonio native knocked down a career-best four three-pointers and made 7-of-10 total shots from the field in 36 minutes of action. Junior guard Maya Hawkins (13 points), sophomore guard Shani Rainey (12 points) and senior forward Alyssa Lang (11 points) also reached double digits in the scoring column.

Saturday marked the first time since the 2006-07 season that a Rice team won consecutive road games on a conference road trip, having last accomplished the feat Feb. 9-11 at Southern Miss (W, 65-44) and UCF (W, 75-57).

"First let me say congratulations to Marlin and his team on a hard-fought game," Rice head coach Tina Langley said. "He's doing an awesome job at FIU, and I'm so happy for him. I'm really excited for our team. We went into the locker room afterwards and talked that this is the team we've become, that we've worked really hard to get to this point. It wasn't a perfect game but I was proud of the way we came out and executed. We're excited now to return home and get our fans at our arena for our final home stand."

Rice outshot FIU (4-22, 2-13) 45 percent to 39 percent and won the battle of the boards (39-28).

The Owls jumped out to a 14-10 lead after an opening quarter in which six different players registered points while holding FIU to just 29 percent shooting.

In the second quarter Rice outscored FIU 22-17 to take a 36-27 halftime lead and shot a sizzling 70 percent (9-of-13) from the field. Rainey scored 8 of her 12 points in the quarter while Knight chipped in 5 points. The Owls had assists on seven of their nine made baskets and scored 10 points in the paint.

Knight carried the scoring load for the Owls out of halftime knocking down all three of her third quarter shot attempts, including two three-pointers, for nine total points. The Owls pushed their lead to as large as 56-41 near the end of the period.

In the fourth FIU made a run and closed to within 64-60 with 33 seconds remaining but the Owls made their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

The Owls now return home for their final two home games of the season, beginning on Thursday, Feb. 25 versus Southern Miss.
