EL PASOMaya Hawkins scored a season-high 25 points and Nicole Iademarco added a career-high 23 points to help lead the Rice Owls women’s basketball team to an 80-76 victory at UTEP Saturday afternoon.

Rice (16-9, 7-7) clinched a berth to the C-USA Championships and won their fourth consecutive C-USA contest for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign. The Owls improved to 7-3 in their last 10 games and won their fifth game in their last six overall. In addition, Rice’s 16 victories on the season are the most since the 2011-12 season.

“That was another relentless team win,” Rice head coach Tina Langley said. “Again we had to overcome a lot of adversity, but time and time again we had different players step up. Maya and Nicole provided outstanding leadership for us today as they always do. Their consistency and toughness is tremendous. I’m so proud of the fight this team showed on the road these last two games.”

In a contest that saw 14 lead changes, Rice made a season-high 27 free throws and outshot UTEP (6-20, 3-11) from the field, 45 percent-38 percent.

After trailing for most of the game, UTEP took a brief 58-56 lead with 6:49 left to go in the fourth quarter. From that point on Hawkins scored 13 of her 25 points, knocking down all eight of her free throw attempts along with a made three-pointer. The Miners cut the Owls lead to 78-76 with 20 seconds remaining but Hawkins proceeded to step up and knock down two clutch free throws after UTEP was forced to foul.

UTEP’s Sparkle Taylor led all players with 34 points, 20 of which came in the second half.
The Owls will continue their season-long road trip next week beginning with Southern Miss on Thursday (6 p.m.), followed by Louisiana Tech on Saturday at 7 p.m.
