RUSTON, La. – The Rice Owls women’s basketball team had their four-game winning streak snapped with a 75-55 setback at Louisiana Tech’s Thomas Assembly Center Wednesday evening.
Rice (17-4, 7-2) lost for just the second time in their last 14 games despite a game-high 20 points from redshirt sophomore Erica Ogwumike, her ninth game of 20 or more points this season.
In addition to Ogwumike, junior Lauren Grigsby added 13 points off the bench in 21 minutes.
The Owls were undone by 20 turnovers, an area in which the Lady Techsters (15-9, 6-5) took advantage with a 32-13 differential in points off miscues. Tech also outshot the Owls from the field 61 percent-48 percent, a season-high clip allowed by Rice.
Tech’s Kierra Anthony tied Ogwumike with 20 points while Alexus Malone (17 points) and Taylor Stahl (14 points) also scored in double-figures.
The Lady Techsters jumped out to an 18-12 advantage over the Owls after the first quarter and then shot 78 percent (7-of-9) from the field in the second period to outscore Rice 17-13 and take a 35-25 lead into halftime.
Tech scored the first four points of the third quarter to push the lead to 39-25 but out of a timeout Rice responded with a 15-4 run, which included seven straight points from Grigsby to trim the deficit down to 43-40 (5:11). However, the Lady Techsters came right back with a 9-2 spurt of their own to extend the advantage to 52-42 going to the fourth.
Tech outscored Rice 23-13 in the final quarter and the Owls were never able to get the deficit back into single digits.
The Owls return home on Saturday (2 p.m.) for a showdown against C-USA leading WKU and the game will be streamed via FloSports. For tickets and more information, visit riceowls.com.
