HOUSTON - Middle Tennessee's Brea Edwards connected on a game-winning three-pointer with four seconds remaining to hand the Rice Owls women's basketball team a heartbreaking 61-60 loss Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.

The Owls (3-15, 2-5) were led by junior forward Jasmine Goodwine, who poured in a team-high 22 points to go along with four rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Junior guard Maya Hawkins helped Goodwine in the scoring column with 14 points of her own and a game-high nine assists in 39 minutes.

Rice shot a season-high 51 percent from the field (24-of-47) and dished out 17 assists, one off their season-high. The Owls outscored Middle Tennessee 32-26 in points in the paint but the Blue Raiders managed to convert 20 Rice turnovers into a 24-18 advantage in points off miscues.

Middle Tennessee's Alex Johnson scored a game-high 25 points, converting 13-of-16 at the free throw line, while Edwards scored 20 and hit one of her four made three-pointers in the final seconds.

Rice fell behind 19-12 after a first quarter in which MT scored 11 points off turnovers. The Owls shot 67 percent in the period but committed eight turnovers. The Owls bounced back to win the second quarter, 14-11, limiting the Blue Raiders to just 38 percent shooting and closed the deficit to just 30-26 at halftime.

The Owls continued their stretch of strong third quarters by outscoring the Blue Raiders 18-14 out of halftime, with Hawkins (9 points) and Goodwine (7 points) combining to score 16 points. Rice's defense shined in the period, holding MT to just 23 percent shooting and a Hawkins three-pointer with 1:01 remaining brought the Owls back from a 10-point deficit to knot the score at 44-44.

The two teams would play to five ties and five lead changes in the fourth quarter, and Rice took a 59-58 lead with just 31 seconds remaining on a top of the key jumper from Goodwine. MT then committed a turnover with 19 seconds left and were forced to send Goodwine to the free throw line.

Goodwine split the free throws and MT used their final timeout with 13 seconds left in regulation, setting up Edwards' go-ahead long ball. Rice proceeded to use their final timeout and advanced the ball, giving Goodwine an opportunity to win the game but her shot was just off as time expired.

The Owls will play just one game next week, as they face the North Texas Mean Green for the second time this season on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. in Denton. The two teams played an epic triple overtime contest back on Jan. 10 with the Owls winning 100-97.
