CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Rice senior guard Wendy Knight (16 points) was one of three Owls to score in double-figures in the team's 62-55 bounce-back victory at Charlotte Saturday evening.
The Owls (14-3, 4-1), who had their eight-game winning streak snapped last Saturday at FIU, limited Charlotte (6-12, 2-3) to just 37 percent shooting from the field and held the 49ers without a made three-point field goal (0-for-11).
Knight scored in double-figures for a seventh straight game by making 5-of-9 shots from the field, including a 3-of-6 performance from behind the arc. Redshirt sophomore Erica Ogwumike added 14 points, seven of which came in a critical fourth quarter, along with a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Nicole Iademarco also chipped in 10 points in the victory.
The Owls came out of the gates on fire in the opening quarter, making 9-of-12 shots (75 percent) from the field, including 3-of-5 from deep, while outscoring the 49ers 22-13. Ogwumike scored seven points in the first 10 minutes while Iademarco added six points.
In the second quarter, Rice put on the defensive clamps, allowing just eight Charlotte points while pushing their lead to 37-21 at halftime.
Charlotte (6-12, 2-3) managed to close the gap in the third period, outscoring the Owls 14-7 to enter the fourth down 44-35. The 49ers crawled to within 49-45 with 4:12 remaining in the game, but the Owls responded with a 9-3 run, capped off by a clutch Knight three-pointer with 1:32 to go to seal the victory.
The Owls improved to 8-3 in road contests and won in Charlotte for the second time in as many tries.
Rice now return to Houston for a three-game homestand, which begins Friday, Jan. 26 versus UTEP.
The Owls will also host Old Dominion (Jan. 28) and Southern Miss (Feb. 1) during the home stretch.
