Tulsa, Okla. - Tiffani Cousinard led four Tulsa players in double-figure scoring with 15 points as TU defeated Rice 69-42 Sunday afternoon in the Reynolds Center.
Rice is now 8-9 on the season and drop to 2-2 in Conference USA action. TU is now 7-8 and also 2-2 in C-USA.
Also in double-digit scoring for the Golden Hurricane were Loren McDaniel and Taylor Hooker each with 13 points and Kadan Brady came off the bench to score 11 points. McDaniel also had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Freshman Nakachi Maduka led Rice with nine points. Brianna Hypolite scored eight points, while Jessica Kuster and Christal Porter each scored seven points. Kuster led the Owls on the glass with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Golden Hurricane scored the first five points of the contest and led the whole first half en route to a 23-18 half-time lead. The Owls made seven shots from the field in 30 attempts for 23.3 percent. Despite the poor shooting exhibition, the Owls were just down by five at the break. Tulsa only made 10 of its 26 field goal attempts for 38.5 percent and committed 10 turnovers, to Rice's two turnovers.
After two made free throws by Jessica Kuster cut Tulsa's lead to 10 (34-24)in the second half, the Golden Hurricane proceeded to go on a 15-0 run to put the game away.
Again, poor shooting in the second half hurt the Owls' chances. Rice made 25.9 percent from the field (7-27). For the game, the Owls finished at 24.6 percent from the field (14-57).
Tulsa finished the contest at 42.1 percent (24-57) from the field. The Golden Hurricane also out-rebounded Rice 51 to 32.
Rice plays at UCF on Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT).
