Rice (13-3, 3-1) shot a season-low 27 percent from the floor, including a 23 percent clip from beyond the arc.
The Owls were led in scoring by senior guard Wendy Knight, who scored in double-figures for a sixth straight game with 15 points. Freshman guard Sydne Wiggins added an additional season-high 10 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
Rice managed to secure a season-high 21 offensive rebounds in the loss, but those opportunities were converted into just 13 second-chance points.
FIU (5-12, 2-2) had three player score in double-figures, led by a game-high 22 points from Alexis Gordon. Kristian Hudson (15 points) and Kiandre’a Pound (14 points) also scored in double-digits.
Rice went into the locker room at halftime tied 31-31 despite shooting just 29 percent from the floor, including 5-of-17 from beyond the arc. Knight scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes, including the Owls first seven points of the second quarter. Gordon poured in 17 of FIU’s 31 first half points, connecting on 5-of-9 attempts from deep.
After falling behind by as much as 40-33 in the third quarter, Rice responded with 9-2 run of their own to tie the game at 42-42 on a jumper from Erica Ogwumike.
In the fourth quarter, Rice rallied from another seven-point deficit to pull to within 51-49 with 6:29 remaining on Knight’s second made three-pointer. However, FIU would outscore the Owls 19-9 the rest of the way and limited Rice to just two made field goals over the final six minutes.
The Owls will look to start a new win streak next Saturday, Jan. 20 when they travel to Charlotte to face the 49ers.
