Birmingham, Ala. - UAB's Karisma Chapman scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Blazers to a 60-45 Conference USA win over Rice Thursday night inside Bartow Arena.
The Owls are now 6-8 overall and 0-1 C-USA, while the Blazers are now 10-3 on the season and 1-0 in league action.
Freshman Christal Porter came off the bench to lead the Owls in scoring with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Kuster added 9 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. Jessica Goswitz hit three three-pointers for 9 points as well. Sophomore Brittany Carter provided a spark in the second half with a game-high five assists in nine minutes on the court.
Michaelea Kleist was the only other UAB player in double-figure scoring with 10 points. Meagan Brown led the Blazers with 8 rebounds and 4 points.
The Owls began the contest in a 14-3 hole (7:56) with only one made field goal in their first 13 attempts, while committing 12 turnovers. Brianna Hypolite scored on a reverse layup at 16:58, but the Owls did not score again until a made free throw by Jessica Kuster at 8:31.
Rice cut it to 11 (20-9) with a mini 6-0 run, but the Blazers answered with two layups to push the lead to 15 (24-9). The Owls finished the first 20 minutes 3-23 (13 percent) from the field with 15 turnovers. UAB only shot 39 percent on the floor (11-28).
In the second half, Rice was behind 36-20, when UAB went on a 13-0 run to have its biggest lead of the game at 49-20 (9:14). From that point, Rice finished the game by outscoring UAB 25 to 11 and actually outscored the Blazers 34-32 in the second half. The Owls, for the game, shot 31.5 percent (17-54) with 24 turnovers, while UAB finished at 43.4 percent (23-53) with 11 miscues.
Rice faces SMU (7-7, 0-1) at home on Sunday. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
