King Joins Owls' Coaching Staff

Former Boston College assistant

Rice University head women’s basketball coach Tina Langley announced the hiring of assistant coach Latara King on June 12, 2018.

King joins Rice after spending the last year as an assistant coach at Boston College where she also served as the recruiting coordinator.

Prior to Boston College, King coached two years at Monmouth as an assistant. In her first season with the Hawks, Monmouth won six of its final seven league games to finish fourth in the MAAC. She helped recruit and coach three all-conference selections, a member of the all-freshman team, one all-defensive team selection, and three members of the All-MAAC Academic Team.

King began her coaching career at Florida Memorial University in 2010 where she served as an assistant coach before becoming a graduate assistant at Florida State from 2013-15. While with the Seminoles, King assisted the team to two 20-win seasons, and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Elite 8 in 2014-15.

A native of Coral Springs, Florida, King was a three-year starter for Florida Memorial (2005-09) and served as a captain her junior and senior years. In the 2008-09 season, King guided the Lady Lions to their most successful season in eight years. Her senior year was highlighted by winning the Sun Conference and making an appearance at the Division II National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

King graduated from Florida Memorial University in the spring of 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She is also a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
