FAQ Does my annual Owl Club gift qualify for benefits?
Yes, donors will receive benefits in the year after the gift. For example, a donation made between July 1 and June 30 will receive the appropriate benefits beginning in July of the new athletic fiscal year). Only gifts to the Owl Club will qualify for benefits.

Does an Owl Club priority seating gift qualify the donor(s) for benefits?
Yes, football and baseball priority seating donors will qualify for benefits at the full amount of the gift. However, all Owl Club gifts are 80 percent tax deductible per IRS regulations. Gifts to the Owl Club should not be made through either a private foundation or donor advised fund because of the benefits received.

Can my gift to the Owl Club count toward my undergraduate reunion class gift?
Yes, gifts to the Owl Club count toward your undergraduate reunion class giving total. Reunion gifts can be made as either a one-time gift or a five-year pledge.

Can I still give to my favorite sport(s)?
Gifts can be made to an individual sport and, like Owl Club donations, will be applied to the budget of that sport in the year of the donation. Gifts to individual sports will not qualify for Owl Club benefits or seating priority. Individual sports programs also have the opportunity to generate revenue from events including, but not limited to, golf tournaments, clinics and auctions.

How will a gift to the Owl Club help me stay in contact with my favorite sport(s)?
Donors to the Owl Club can provide their sport preferences at the time of their donation. When giving online, donors can type in their sport preferences in the "other" field. If giving by check, please include a note with your sport preferences. Each of the varsity programs will then communicate with the Owl Club donors interested in their sport via e-mail, events, newsletters and/or other special communications.

How will my Owl Club gift financially benefit the sport(s) I support?
The money raised by the Owl Club will provide scholarship aid and program support to all 350-plus Rice student-athletes. These critical resources help support expenses such as recruiting, team travel, housing, training table team meals and summer school tuition.

Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes, all donations to the Owl Club are 80 percent tax-deductible per IRS regulations. If a donor wishes to waive benefits and receive a full tax deduction for their Owl Club gift, the donor must inform the athletics development staff in writing. Please contact your tax advisor if you have any questions.

Will annual giving to the Owl Club impact seat locations for road football games, and post-season bowls and championships?
Requests will be fulfilled based on the season ticket holders' engagement with Rice Athletics and Rice University as measured by the following criteria:

  • Season ticket holder status
  • Annual gifts to the Owl Club

Rice Athletics is currently exploring a new system that encompasses the donor's overall engagement with athletics and the university as a whole. More details to come!
