Rice Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard announced on Monday/Tuesday the hiring of Josh Thiel (TEEL) as Senior Associate AD for Development for the Owls. Thiel comes to South Main from Stanford University where he most recently served as the Associate Director of Development, Major Gifts for the Cardinal Athletic Department.

"Josh Thiel is an experienced and trustworthy development professional," Karlgaard said. "He will build terrific relationships with our supporters and provide excellent mentorship to our young staff."

"I am grateful to Joe Karlgaard and Rice University for this incredible opportunity to help build an elite athletics program for Rice student-athletes, alumni, and the Houston community," Thiel said. "Rice has a rich tradition of academic and athletic excellence, and I'm looking forward to contributing to and enhancing the program."

While at Stanford, Thiel was responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individuals capable of making gifts of $250,000-$5,000,000 in support of 36 varsity programs and 900-plus student-athletes. He served as the development liaison for the football, men's basketball, baseball, men's and women's soccer, softball, women's lacrosse, synchronized swimming, men's and women's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and wrestling programs, assisting each sport in achieving their fundraising objectives. He worked in coordination with the annual fund for Stanford Athletics--the Buck/Cardinal Club--to identify potential major gift prospects, solicit gifts for priority seats, and participate in fiscal and calendar year-end solicitations.

Thiel received his BA in Business Administration-Finance from Cal State Fullerton in 1996 and his Master's in Sports Administration from the University of San Francisco in 1999.

He began his career as the Director of Marketing & Operations for Stanford's women's basketball and baseball teams in 1999. He joined Stanford's Office of Medical Development 2004, serving in three roles through 2010 when he joined the University Of Colorado Hospital Foundation as major gifts officer. He returned to Stanford in his current position in July of 2012.

Thiel will begin his duties at Rice on April 15.
