Rice's women's and men's cross country teams compete this Saturday, November 13 at the NCAA South Central Regional in Waco, Texas. Hosted by Baylor, the meet takes place at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course with the women's 6k event starting at 10 a.m. and the men's 10k at 11 a.m.
The top two teams from each of the nine NCAA regionals, along with 13 at-large teams, earn bids to the NCAA Championship. Individually, the top four runners not on a qualifying team can earn a bid as well.
Competing for coach Jon Warren's men's team are Gabe Cuadra, John Cavallo, Matt Carey, James Llamas, Wyatt Doop, Anthony Urbanelli, Travis Roberts, and Michael Trejo. In their last competition on Nov. 1, the Owls placed third at the Conference USA Championship with 87 points with Trejo being the top finisher with a 10th place showing to earn All-C-USA Second Team.
A year ago on this same course, Rice placed 10th in a field of 19 teams with 227 points. Simon Bucknell placed 32nd to lead Rice, while Trejo was 38th. Arkansas won the team title with 47 points.
The Rice women's cross country team placed second at the C-USA Championship on Nov. 1 with two top 10 finishers in Halsey Fower (sixth) and Nicole Mericle (eighth). In addition to those two, head coach Jim Bevan will run Britany Williams, Allison Pye, Meredith Gamble, Marie Thompson, and Heather Olson on Saturday.
At the 2009 NCAA South Central Regional, the Rice women's team placed fifth with 172 points as SMU won team title with 43 points. Fowler led the Owls by placing 21st.
