Terre Haute, Ind. - The Rice men's cross country team runs on Sunday, October 16 at the Pre-National Invitational hosted by Indiana State.
Action takes place on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. Six of the top 30 and 29 regionally ranked men's team will be in competition. The Owls are ranked fifth in the South Central Region behind Arkansas, Texas A&M, Texas, and Lamar. Running for Rice will be Michael Trejo, Gabe Cuadra, John Cavallo, William Firth, James Llamas, Matt Carey, and Travis Roberts.
Competition begins at 10 a.m. (CT) with the running of the men's 8,000 meter Blue Race. That will be followed by the women's 6,000 meter Blue Race at 10:40 a.m. (CT). Gates will open for spectators at 8 a.m. (CT).
Indiana State was selected to host the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships for the eighth straight year and the ninth time in the last 10 years. The host for the national championships also hosts the pre-national invitational each year. This year's NCAA Championship is slated for Monday, November 21 with the men's 10k starting at 11:08 (CT) and the women's 6k starting at 11:58 (CT).
Indiana State hosted the NCAA Championship for the first time in 2002 and was named the host from 2004 thru 2010. The championship was scheduled to be held at two other sites before returning to Indiana State in 2013 but was awarded to ISU for 2011 earlier this year. The University of Louisville has been designated as the site of the 2012 Championship.
