NCAA South Central Regional Results

Waco, Texas - The Rice men's cross country squad placed sixth at the NCAA South Central Regional held Saturday morning at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.

The Owls scored 202 points, just behind fifth place UTSA (196) and ahead of Houston (214). Texas won the team title with 40 points, while Texas A&M finished second with 56 to earn the two automatic bids for the NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Aggies' Henry Lelei won the 10k event with a time of 30:09.4. Arkansas' Eric Fernandez was second at 30:18.0. Matt Carey led the Owls with a time of 31:57.3 in finishing 32nd. Senior Michael Trejo was the second Owl to finish as he concluded his CC career with 37th place time of 32:06.5.

"We changed are strategy for this meet and it worked out pretty well," commented Rice head coach Jon Warren. "To finish in the top six in this region is a great accomplishment and within our goals that we set at the start of the season. The team ran smart and we had a tight pack from start to finish. Matt Carey had his best race of the year and Michael Trejo ended his cross country career on a high note."
