Houston - The Rice Owls men's cross country squad placed fourth at the Conference USA Cross Country Championship Monday morning at Wildcat Golf Club and hosted by Rice University.

Rice scored 108 points while Tulsa won the team title with 35 points. UTEP was second (48 points) and Houston was third (71 points). The Golden Hurricane had five runners in the top 10 and was led by Carl Stones (fourth; 24:01.5) and Andy Heyes (fifth; 24:02.6).

UTEP's Justice Chirchi won the individual title with a time of 23:39.0. Chirchi's teammate Elkana Rotich was second at 23:51.1, while Houston's Wesley Ruttoh was third (23:55.3).

The Owls were led by senior Michael Trejo's 18th place finish with a time of 25:02.6. Sophomore John Cavallo finished 20th (25:18.4), freshman William Firth was 22nd (25:19.3), and junior Matt Carey was 26th (25:38.0). Rice's fifth runner was sophomore Travis Roberts who placed 31st (26:03.2). Trejo and Cavallo earn All-C-USA Third Team honors.

"We had a great day for a cross country meet and Tulsa, UTEP, and Houston ran above expectations," commented Rice head coach Jon Warren. "We ran about where I expected. Those teams and coaches did a great job and for us to finish in the top half of the conference is a good accomplishment."

Rice now prepares for the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 12 in Waco, Texas.
