Men's C-USA Championship Results
JACKSON, Miss. – The Rice Owls men’s cross country team placed third overall at Saturday’s Conference USA Championships, hosted by Southern Miss at the Choctaw Trails, the team’s highest finish since the 2013 season.
The third place finish for the Owls marked the ninth time in the last 13 years they have finished in the top three. Middle Tennessee won the league title with 31 points, followed by Charlotte at 38 points for second place.
“To a man our guys ran a good race on a hilly course,” Rice head coach Jon Warren said. “We had a spread of about 45 seconds within the top seven. This was a good team effort overall. The two teams that finished ahead of us could possibly be in the top 25 so this was a very good day.”
The Owls were led by freshman Hociel Landa, who placed 10th overall in the 8k race with a time of 24:46 to earn Second Team All-Conference honors and was named the Freshman of the Meet.
Senior Marco Ruiz also earned Second Team All-Conference accolades by placing 14th (25:08), while redshirt junior Matt Calem (15th-25:08) and junior Clay Musial (19th-25:19) took home Third Team All-Conference honors. Just missing all-conference recognition was senior Bradley Dohner, who placed 22nd overall in a time of 25:24.
In addition to the Owls top five runners, the rest of the team finished in this order: Alex Topini (24th-25:29), Adolfo Carvalho (25th-25:33), Imran Bell (31st-25:51).
Next up for the Owls is the NCAA South Central Regional, which will be held Nov. 10 in College Station hosted by Texas A&M.
