LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Competing against some of the nation's best, the Rice Owls men's cross country team placed 36th overall (126 points) in the Men's Red 8k race Saturday morning at the Pre Nationals meet, hosted by Louisville.
The Owls finished in the following order: junior Clay Musial (158th-24:55), freshman Hocial Landa (167th-25:01), senior Marco Ruiz (168th-25:01), sophomore Adolfo Carvalho (174th-25:03), junior Matt Calem (194th-25:14) and junior Imran Bell (199th-25:15).
"We had a rough start with the gun and a perceived false start that actually wasn't," Rice head coach Jon Warren said. "I realized we were too far back at the 2k mark. What I didn't realize until later is that we were one of the teams negatively effected by the odd start and the guys got caught in the back. With 280-plus quality runners, it turned out to be too big of a hill to climb to the place where I think this group should have. This is a good, honest performing team. This result doesn't reflect who they are."
The Owls will now gear up for the Conference USA Championships, which will be held Oct. 28 in Jackson, Miss.
