The Rice men's cross country placed team third at the 36th Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational with a total of 70 points held on the on the Rice campus.

Lamar won the event with 36 points, while Texas A&M Corpus Christi was second with 67 points. Patrick Kimeli of TAMCC won the individual title with a time of 16:52, while McNeese State's Alex Bruce Littlewo came in second (16:55).

"I liked the team's peformance, but I was a little surprised in the order of our finish," stated Owl head Jon Warren. "The practices had not shown Will (Firth), James (Llamas), and John (Cavallo) being ahead of Gabe Cuadra, Matt Carey, and Michael Trejo. So, that made it interesting. It would have been nice to have those three where I thought they could be and have Cavallo and Llamas finish where they did and that would have been a solid finish."

Sophomore John Cavallo led the Owl contingent with an eighth place time of 17:08 and James Llamas was 12th (17:21). Rice is next in action when it runs at the Grass Routes Run Festival in Austin in two weeks (Sept. 30).
