DALLAS - Rice alum Keith Pierce of Lewisville used a big early lead to hang on late to win the 2016 BMW Dallas Marathon Sunday afternoon.
Pierce won with a time of 2:29.27, defeating the next closest competitor (Logan Sherman) by a little over one minute (2:30.39). Pierce took control in the first 10 kilometers and extended his lead to three minutes as he raced past White Rock Lake. Sherman closed the deficit in the final four miles but Pierce persevered for the victory.
Pierce, who is currently an assistant track and cross country coach at Denton Ryan High School, returned to competition earlier in the year after taking off several years for the birth of his 5-year-old triplets.
The Rice graduate (2003) was the recipient of the 2003 Emmett Brunson Award, honoring the most outstanding Rice men's track and field senior athlete.
