Entry fees are $25 in advance of race day; $30 on race day; and free for Rice faculty, staff, students and their families (must show Rice ID at packet pick up). Packet pick up will at Fleet Feet on 2408 Rice Blvd., in the Rice Village, Oct. 30-31, and on race day at the southwest entrance to Rice Stadium beginning at 4 pm. Registration forms are also available at the Rice track home page, visit www.RiceOwls.com and select men's track & field from the drop-down menu.
The Fun Run/Walk is generously presented by Coady & Lewis Associates for the enjoyment of all those in the Rice community: fans, supporters, faculty, students, staff and their children. This event could not happen without their support.
All proceeds will support the Rice men's track & field and cross country programs. In 2006-07, the Owls had three all-Conference USA honorees in cross country, then had three league champs and made 15 trips to the medal stands at the C-USA indoor and outdoor championships.
The Owls were even more successful in the classroom as they won the Conference USA Sport Academic Award for carrying a 3.099 team GPA through the academic year, the best of any men's track & field program in the league. Rice has received the awards in both years since joining the league. On way to earning the team award, 16 Owls were named to the C-USA Commissioners Honor Roll for carrying a 3.2 or better GPA.
Leading the Owls to success in both arenas since matriculating is senior Brett Olson, a civil engineering student from Will Rice College who medaled both academically and athletically last spring. In April, he won a C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal for having a better than 3.75 GPA. A month later, Olson took third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the C-USA championships. Olson was also honored last spring at Rice's scholar-athlete banquet with the Dr. Hubert E. Bray award for holding the top GPA among male student-athletes at Rice.
Olson credits being a member of the track program in aiding his success in the classroom: "I honestly don't think running is a hindrance on my studies that much because it forces me to schedule in time for exercise and fun. I work a lot better when I run consistently and have time to relax with my team. Sometimes it can be annoying when my friends go out on Friday night, and I have to go to bed early for practice the next morning, but it's a small sacrifice. Other than that, I would just say that it's fun to be challenged both in athletics and in the classroom, and it feels great to succeed in both."
