DUSSELDORF, Germany - For a second straight year Rice senior All-American decathlete Scott Filip finished as the top point scorer for the United States in the annual Thorpe Cup, talying 7632 points for a fourth place finish overall on Sunday.
Filip, who helped lead the Americans to a team title in 2016 as the individual champion, and Team USA placed second behind Germany this weekend by a count of 38,642 to 37,321. Germany's Ituah Enahoro took the individual honors for all Thorpe Cup competitors with 8028 points.
The Thorpe Cup is annual competition between the United States of America and Germany in the men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon. Seven men and seven women from each country comprise the competition, which is scored on an individual and team basis. Athletes receive a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events.
This past season Filip earned USTFCCA First Team All-American honors with a fifth place finish in the decathlon while earning C-USA titles in both the decathlon and heptathlon.
