HOUSTON, Texas – Rice University men’s track and field head coach Jon Warren announced on Monday the promotion of Brek Christensen to assistant coach.
Christensen takes over for former assistant coach Casey Thom, who left the coaching profession to enter into private business. Thom still plan on staying involved with the Owls program.
“Brek comes in with a year under his belt and has already shown the ability to be an outstanding coach and asset to our program,” Warren said. “He obviously had success with some of our guys last season and now we’re going to expand his role to other events. Casey was outstanding, and will be tough to replace, but I think Brek is more than capable and we’re excited to have him here.”
A volunteer assistant last season, Christensen oversaw the men’s throwers and helped guide Duncan Dickerson to a historical season with the Owls. Dickerson established a new Rice record with a hammer throw of 62.21m (201’1”) to become the first Owl to ever win a conference title in the hammer throw. Dickerson also placed second in the weight throw at the C-USA Indoor Championships and established a new school record (17.33m) at the Howie Ryan Invite.
“I couldn’t imagine a better place to start my coaching career,” said Christensen. “I obviously have big shoes to fill, but I have the passion and work ethic required to succeed in this sport. I’m very excited to get to work with so many great athletes. Jon and Casey both allowed me to get the type of experience I needed last year and it really was a unique opportunity to grow as a coach at such a young age. I’m looking forward to getting things started.”
Christensen earned a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2013 and a master’s degree in 2015, both in Kinesiology at Sam Houston State, where he was one of the most decorated throwers in the program’s history. The Cypress, Texas native won five events in his career, including a victory in the hammer throw at the Victor Lopez Classic in 2014. He also placed third in the weight throw at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in 2014.
