DUSSELDORF, Germany – Rice senior All-American decathlete Scott Filip will look to repeat as the United States individual champion at the 24th annual Thorpe Cup to be held in Germany this weekend, July 29-30. The venue for this year’s competition is Rather Waldstadion in Dusseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Thorpe Cup is annual competition between the United States of America and Germany in the men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon. Seven men and seven women from each country comprise the competition, which is scored on an individual and team basis. Athletes receive a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events.
Last year Filip was the individual winner in Fayetteville, Arkansas with 7876 points as the United States team carried the first five spots in the standings and won the team title 38,845 to 37,427.
This past season Filip earned USTFCCA First Team All-American honors with a fifth place finish in the decathlon while earning C-USA titles in both the decathlon and heptathlon.
