FAYETTEVILLE, AR – On the heels of a 10th place finish in the decathlon at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Oregon, Rice junior All-American Scott Filip will continue his sensational summer as a member of USA Track and Field at the 23rd annual Thorpe Cup in Fayetteville, Ark.

Named in honor of Oklahoma native and 1912 Olympic decathlon champion, Jim Thorpe, the 23rd annual Thorpe Cup competition will be held on the campus of the University of Arkansas at John McDonnell Field, July 29-30.

Filip, from Bloomingdale, Ill., has bounced back from Tommy John surgery to have a standout summer in which he won gold at the Pan Am Combined Events Cup in Ottawa followed by the 10th place finish (7680 points) at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

The Thorpe Cup is an international track and field competition between USA and Germany, whose teams are composed of up to seven men and seven women who compete in the decathlon and heptathlon. Athletes receive a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events in the decathlon and heptathlon. The top five men’s and top three women’s scores are added together to determine the overall men’s and women’s team winners.
