SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador -- Rice's Pablo Solares won the 1500 meters and finished a close second in the 800 meters last weekend at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Open Track and Field Championships held in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Representing his native Mexico, Solares took the 1500 crown with the time of 3:45.29, beating fellow countryman Isaias Haro by three seconds. In the 800, Solares was edged at the finish to take second with the time of 1:49.28. The United State's Golden Coachman won the gold in 1:49.01.
As a senior for the Owls last spring, Solares won both events at the Conference USA championships held at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium in May. He finished ninth in the 1500 at the NCAA championships in June, recording a lifetime best and Rice record 3:40.22 in his final collegiate meet. With his track eligibly complete, he is on pace to graduate next spring.
