The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the men's 2009 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team. A record total of 327 student-athletes representing 107 Division I institutions made up the men's 2009 All-Academic team. Representing Rice were Philip Adam and Simon Bucknell.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
Adam, a junior from Santa Maria, Calif., posted a 3.94 gpa in economics. During the Conference USA Outdoor Championship, Adam placed first in the decathlon with a personal-best high of 7,331 points. During the NCAA Outdoor Championship, Adam finished 14th in the nation with another all-time personal high of 7,358 points, which ranks second in school history.
Bucknell, from Auckland, New Zealand, was an automatic qualifier in the 1500m for the NCAA Outdoor Championship. He also placed ninth at the C-USA meet in the 1500m.
