EDMONTON, AB – Rice graduate All-American thrower Evan Karakolis took home a gold medal in the javelin at Friday’s Canadian Track and Field Championships at Foote Field in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The Scarborough, Ontario native jumped from third to first place with a throw of 71.77m (235’5”) on his final attempt to surpass John Krzyszkowski and Kyle Nielsen. Karakolis waited out the final two throws, and clinched first when Nielsen’s final attempt (71.54m) came up just shy.
Earlier in the event, Karakolis had throws of 68.36m, 68.70m and 65.96m.
Karakolis fell short of the Olympic standard of 83.00m (272’3”) that is required to advance to the Olympic Games in Rio. The two-time First Team All-American broke his own school record earlier this season with a throw of 79.30m (260’2”).
