AUSTIN, Texas - Rice sophomore thrower Evan Karakolis was named a Capital One Academic All-American, earning second team honors, the organization announced on Thursday.

Since 2007, Rice's men's track and field athletes have garnered 13 Academic All-American awards.

Karakolis is a Mechanical Engineering major and boasts a 4.02 GPA. Earlier this season he was named both a CoSIDA Academic All-District and to the C-USA All-Academic Team.

Karakolis earned USTFCCCA First-Team All-American honors by placing seventh in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the highest finish in the event by a Rice Owl since 1967. He also re-established his own school record (70.80m) and placed third at the NCAA West Prelims. The Ontario native also won his first career C-USA Outdoor title in the javelin by winning the competition the final throw of the event.
