SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Rice junior decathlete Scott Filip will enter day two of competition at the USATF Outdoor Championships in fourth place in the decathlon after compiling 4234 points on Thursday at Hornet Stadium.
Filip, who earned USTFCCCA First Team All-American honors in the decathlon earlier this month, placed in the top five in four of five events, including second place finishes in both the high jump (2.04m-season best) and 400m (48.47).
Filip, the freshly minted C-USA Male Field Athlete of the Year, began the afternoon with a fifth place finish in the 100m (10.72), followed by a third place result in the long jump (7.45m/24-5.50). Devon Williams of Georgia leads all competitors with 4321 points, followed by Trey Hardee (Nike, 4306) and Zach Ziemek (adidas, 4260).
Day two of the decathlon will pick back up at 2:55 p.m. (CT) on Friday beginning with the 110m hurdles.
In addition to Filip, junior throw Austin Riddle made his first national appearance with a 17th place in the hammer throw, recording a mark of 62.63m on his last attempt. Riddle earned USTFCCCA Honorable Mention All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Former Owl Ariana Ince represented as an unattached athlete in the women's javelin and placed second overall with a heave of 58.32m, finishing behind only Kara Winger (62.80m).
